Just before midnight on Saturday 18th September 1943, Halifax Bomber BB245 crashed into Chapel Hill, Off Valley Road, Darrington, Pontefract and as a result, 12 people died.

Almost 75 years later a group of people (Dave Hepworth, Dennis Burns, Judith Fisher, Gail Jenkins, Jeff Pickering and Councillor Andy Tagger began a project with the Parish Council's full backing to plan a commemoration of what has been Darrington's most tragic event.
